Art Feature - Behind the Scenes, Concept Art & Sneak Peeks
Hello dear communeighty! Today we've got a very different news post for you! In our usual "Community Updates" we focus mostly on the day-to-day happenings of our upcoming updates and plans. But today we want to experiment with a new format: ✨ Art Features! ✨ We often hear how you, our community, loves to read and see the process of creating art for the game. So today's post will be all about that: We'll show you some past, present and future art projects, so you can have a closer look at the art department and their endeavours. We hope you'll enjoy this sort of news post. If you do, let us know in the comments, and we may make it a regular thing! :) Now please take a seat, and enjoy our concept art, sketches and projects that we have been busy with for the past few months.
🚨 Disclaimer: All artwork that gets shared before its official release is a work-in-progress and may be subject to change. 🚨
👀 Sneak Peek: What’s Going On? 👀
We have shared one of these images on our social media channels already, but we think it would be awesome to show you more sneak peeks in our news as well. Can you figure out what horse breed(s) this might be?
Such sneak, many peek, wow...
🖼️ New Foundation: Backgrounds 🖼️
We're currently working on some huge changes to our foundation. Most of them are not ready to be shown just yet, but our foundation breeder Caroll agreed to show you this little sneak peek. There's going to be a nice new area to showcase all our wonderful foundation breeds, and our background artist Chutkat is currently working on the art for that! These background are inspired by the continent and location they take place in. Can you guess which background belongs to which continent?
🎨 Overlay System 🎨
A priority of our art team at the moment is remaking and adding coats in a way that they can be used once our new backend horse image system is out. Today we want to introduce you to a part of it: the overlay system!
At the moment, we are already using overlays to realise markings and patterns in game. A bay sooty horse with the white pattern roan would at the moment consists of these images added on top of each other: Bay sooty horse body + mane + tail + Roan overlay.
The way we want our new system to work is to create some coats as overlays as well. In this case the same horse would consist of: Bay horse body + mane + tail + Sooty overlay + Roan overlay. This way, the system could create, for example, 9 bay sooty coats out of only 3 base bay colours and 3 sooty layers. At the moment, our artists would have to draw 3 base bay colours and 9 bay sooty colours (so 6 additional coats!) to get the same amount of variety.
Although these variants might not all be dramatically different, it allows us to introduce much more versions for some coats. Pangaré, Grey and Dun will work similarly, but we will have to make small adjustments to make it work. For example, Grey overlays will also need to include hyperpigmentation layers, to make certain coats appear darker than they are for the sake of realism. There's still a lot of work left to do to figure all of these out, but we're excitedly preparing for all the possibilities this new system will open up!
🖌️ Haflinger Horse: How the Art Redo Took Form 🖌️
After all these exciting sneak peeks, we want to give you some glimpses into past artwork projects. When creating new models for our horses, they go through quite a few stages before you see them in-game. Take a look at our Haflinger horses, who have received a makeover at the end of last year!
🎥 Exmoor Stallion: Speedpainting Part 2! 🎥
To end this wonderful art display we want to show off the newest video on our YouTube channel! It's part 2 of a speedpainting video where we get to watch how our amazing horse artist & art director Dominika recreated the Exmoor Pony. Watch part 1 here if you've missed it, and the freshly published part 2 here!
We will get in touch with you all once we know when we have another Community Update incoming. Thank you for reading!
