Update 28/05/2020: Our new server is here!

You may have noticed that we were in maintenance for a little bit, this is because we have received our new server and transferred the game to it! This means you should see an increase in speed and fewer issues when more players are online. We will have a larger newspost at the beginning of next week detailing a few things, but we wanted to take some time to mention this.

Update 27/05/2020: We've got exciting news!

  • The Breeder's Advice has been fixed today and now considers the correct set of stats for the flat racing and endurance disciplines. This could also mean that you find the recommended disciplines have changed for (some of) your horse(s). No weighing of stats is implemented in these calculations.

  • The V2-transfer related competitions bug was fixed this Tuesday! It turned out the horse tack wasn’t working properly into the scoring calculation. This glitch snuck into the system when the competitions were transferred over to V2. The scores of your horses should now be back to working just like before the transfer! It could be that some of you had not even noticed anything being off, as the score differences were not too big luckily. That this has been fixed also means we have taken an important hurdle on our way towards re-worked scoring calculations.

  • Another exciting note: Our new server arrived this morning and we've started the preparations!! It is a bit like buying a new computer with literally nothing installed yet - before you can start using it you'll need to install the software and programs you need. Which is what we are doing right now! Once that is finished we will test if all has gone well and, if that's the case, we will head into maintenance mode to transfer the game. This won't happen today yet, but you can expect it in the near future!

Last Friday we asked our community to participate in a poll to determine which stats will be used in the flat racing competition. 675 players from 31 countries have given their vote! We could not have hoped for a higher participation and are humbled by how engaged you are with our game. We understand this as a clear signal: You, the community, would like to help us shape the future of Horse Reality.

Many of you have expressed a wish for clearer communication from the team. We hope this news announcement is a further step towards this goal. We will first be announcing the results of the poll and then give you an update on what we are working on these days. We were hoping to address some other questions and topics that were brought forth by you in the last few days but decided to postpone it due to the length of this post. If you have something on your mind that you think many in the community are wondering about, let one of our community managers know through the contact form!

Poll Results and Discipline Stats

You voted 17 times for strength, 448 times for sprint, and 210 times for both stats to be included.

Sprint is the clear winner of this poll! Our community has spoken, this is what the majority of you would like to see, and your wish shall be our command.

Below, you find the chosen stats that will be used in the competition calculations for flat racing, endurance, and eventing, as they will be coded in the future.

Flat Racing

Conformation: Back, front legs, gallop, hindquarters, neck, posture, shoulders
Genetic Potential: Speed, acceleration, stamina, sprint

The four genetic potential stats will influence all routines in the future. We hope to differ the weight of the stats per routine so it matches better with the length of the race. The next item on our to-do list is to change the code for the Breeder’s Advice to reflect these changes. The actual reworking of the flat racing scoring calculations will take us some more time to code because our V2 developer needs to finish the current tasks first (you can read more about that below).

Endurance

Conformation: Back, canter, head, neck, trot, walk
Genetic Potential: Speed, stamina, strength, surefootedness

Of the three disciplines, endurance was not too heavily affected by our recent discovery luckily, as both the Wiki article and the competition calculation used the same stats. The Breeder’s Advice will be reworked to also take the walk stat into account.

Eventing

Conformation: Canter, head, neck, posture, trot, walk
Genetic Potential: Balance, bascule, speed, strength, surefootedness

In Eventing, both the Breeder’s Advice and the competition calculation took walk into account, but the old Wiki article did not mention it as a relevant stat. We have decided to keep Walk in the scoring formula, as it matters for the dressage shows which are part of eventing. The majority of eventing breeders seemed to agree on that. This is good news for us because it means that we do not have to change the reworked eventing calculations that will soon be added to our test server (as part of our planned competition re-work, not connected to the recent events).

What’s Next?

With the beginning of this week, we will all return to our work in progress. The feedback we have received in the last days has made it clear that we need to be more transparent about what is going on behind the scenes. Especially the work of our developers is causing many misunderstandings between the team and the community, which is why we added a detailed explanation of each of their steps, which you can read up on below.

πŸ€–πŸ€–πŸ€– Developers πŸ€–πŸ€–πŸ€–

Fixing the Breeder’s Advice of flat racing and endurance to recommend the correct disciplines is our first priority.

We have ordered a new server a few weeks ago and expect it to arrive any day now! The very moment it arrives, we will head into maintenance mode and transition the game to the new server. If it fulfils our expectations, the game should then be much quicker! This should mean shorter loading periods when switching from V1 to V2 pages and faster results after entering horses in events. If all goes well, giving the advanced premium search to all members will finally be possible! If we are able to do this, we will announce it 30 days prior so that nobody wrongly buys premium to get the advanced search. But - these are future hopes. First, we need to see how the server performs. Update: You can suggest premium perks here in case the advanced search can be made available to all players, since we'd need other perks to replace it and keep the premium membership worthwhile.

Once those two things are done, we will dedicate ourselves to fixing the recent V2 competition bug. This bug has snuck into our code when we transitioned from V1 to V2, causing minor differences in the scoring across all disciplines. Due to the recent events, we have not yet been able to look into it further.

After that, we’ll continue our work on the improved calculations for the competitions. We will take some extra time to go over the calculations and make sure no errors occur. We have been focussing on eventing, endurance, and reining, as their scoring calculations were the most incorrect, but will take a look at all disciplines. The new flat racing calculations will be added to this process.

Finally, we will resume our work at the club- and breed-specific competitions. Any details regarding them will be addressed in another post. There have been many questions about them, and possibly some misunderstandings as well, so we’d like to address these properly in a separate post.

Summary:

⚈ Fixing Breeder’s Advice of flat racing and endurance βœ…
⚈ Transferring the game to a new server βœ…
⚈ Fixing the recent V2 transfer related competition bug βœ…
⚈ Re-checking the improved competition calculations & implementing them in our test server
⚈ Club- and breed-specific competitions

🎨🎨🎨 Art team 🎨🎨🎨

We have shortened our art-list a little bit. Our last status update contained information regarding breeds that are on-hold until everything below is finished. This is what the art team is currently actively working on:

⚈ Brumby Horses: Ready to go on our test server! βœ…
⚈ Thoroughbreds: Colouring and adding them to our system.
⚈ Mustang Horses: Colouring pearl & champagne (then grey and white patterns)
⚈ Mongolian and Namib Desert Horses: Ready to start colouring. For our next breeds, we focus on these feral breeds to open up more Wildlife Parks.
⚈ New monthly backgrounds to fancy up your horses.
⚈ Avatar creator: Giving you the ability to design your own player character on HR, similar to how our NPCs are made.
⚈ Continent-specific city maps: Each continent will get its own styled city map.

🎀🎀🎀 Community & Content Managers: 🎀🎀🎀

⚈ Rules: The rules of HR are outdated and often ambiguous. We hope an updated version will bring more clarity to our community members. Our lawyer is also writing up an entirely new terms of use and privacy policy. βœ…
⚈ Moderators: Once the new rules are out, a correspondent update of our guidelines and templates for moderators will be in order. Reminders, warnings etc. will get a more uniform look.
⚈ Wiki: We are working on a new and improved Wiki. 50% of the content is already transferred, but it takes a lot of time because we are rewriting and fact-checking every article.
⚈ Ideas board: We are working on a system to review and answer every idea that was brought up in the current 1004 topics of our ideas board in the forum.
⚈ Bugreports: A similar system needs to be set up to keep track of and answer the bug reports in the forum. βœ…
⚈ Communication: We plan to release more status reports & more frequent updates.
⚈ Our content manager is preparing social media posts weekly and learning video editing. Hopefully, we can start with our own videos and behind the scenes around summer! More details will come later.

The End

There are many more topics we would love to address, but this news announcement is already long and contains lots of information. Status updates like this one will come more frequently from now on, hopefully giving us the opportunity to talk about more of your questions.

Thank you for your time!

Yours truly,
The Horse Reality Team
